Red flag guide

Technician says gas top-up is needed. What should you ask first?

Gas top-up may be valid, but it should come with readings and an explanation. In a healthy sealed system, refrigerant should not keep disappearing.

Ask these questions

  1. What is the pressure reading?
  2. Which refrigerant does my system use: R32, R410A, or R22?
  3. Did you check for leaks before topping up?
  4. If gas is low, where did the gas go?
  5. Will this solve the issue permanently or only temporarily?

When gas top-up may be reasonable

  • Pressure is genuinely low and the reading is shown.
  • There is evidence of a leak or previous repair issue.
  • The system is old and has not been checked for a long time.

Red flags

  • Gas top-up recommended without gauge reading.
  • Repeated gas top-ups within months.
  • No leak discussion, only “gas low”.
  • Price changes only after the technician arrives.

Fair price range

Gas top-up is commonly around S$80-S$250 depending on refrigerant type and scope. Leak diagnosis or repair can cost more and should be quoted separately.
